According to a police report released on Monday, June 27, Mara was discovered in the St. Lawrence River in Cape Vincent, New York, on Sunday, June 26. Per the report: “The preliminary investigation suggests the victim drowned while swimming. The victim’s body showed no signs of foul play and was transported to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office pending an autopsy to determine an official cause of death.” The investigation is ongoing. Mara’s manager Craig Dorfman also confirmed her death. “Mary was one of the finest actresses I ever met,” he wrote. “I still remember seeing her onstage in 1992 in ‘Mad Forest’ off Broadway. She was electric, funny and a true individual. Everyone loved her. She will be missed.” Her brother-in-law revealed that she was staying at her sister’s nearby summer home when the accident occurred. The Syracuse-native studied at both San Francisco State University and Yale, launching her acting career in 1989 with the television movie The Preppie Murder. Mara’s work in film and television spanned 30 years, appearing in shows such as Nash Bridges, NYPD Blue, Ray Donovan, Star Trek: Enterprise, Judging Amy, 7th Heaven, Monk, Nip/Tuck and Bones, and more. Making her film debut in 1992 with Love Potion No. 9, she went on to star that same year as Billy Crystal’s daughter in Mr. Saturday Night. Mara also appeared in the 2008 thriller Prom Night alongside Brittany Snow, with her final movie credit in 2020’s Break Even. The actress is survived by her stepdaughter, sisters and nephew.
