The Sandman co-executive producer David S. Goyer explained to Den of Geek, “In some ways, it’s easier because we’ve educated the audience to the basic ideas. We’ve shown how the dreaming life can affect the waking world. With that groundwork done, the show can now build on those themes. They’re more like jazz, where you get to plan variations. And we get to stretch our wings a bit more.” Here’s everything to know so far about The Sandman Season 2 (when and if it happens!), including release date, episode count, plot details, cast and more.
Is Sandman getting a Season 2?
The Sandman Season 2 is a go! Neil Gaiman said in a statement, “Millions upon millions of people have welcomed and watched and loved The Sandman on Netflix, from established Sandman fans to people who were simply curious, and then became obsessed with the Lord of Dreams, his family and their goings-on. It gives me unbelievable pleasure to say that, working with Netflix and Warner Bros., [fellow executive producers] Allan Heinberg, David Goyer and I will be bringing even more of The Sandman stories to life. There are some astonishing stories waiting for Morpheus and the rest of them (not to mention more members of the Endless Family to meet). Nobody is going to be happier about this than the Sandman cast and crew: they are the biggest Sandman fans there are. And now it’s time to get back to work. There’s a family meal ahead, after all. And Lucifer is waiting for Morpheus to return to Hell ….” Allan Heinberg previously told Rolling Stone that the crew was ready to get going on The Sandman Season 2 even before it was officially greenlit. “We had a writer’s room for 20 weeks to talk about Season 2 and to break stories and generate outlines and first drafts,” Heinberg said. “And now I’m having early talks with production design and VFX and getting everything into position, so that if we are lucky enough to have a Season 2, we’re ready to go, ideally with the same team who made Season 1.”

How many Sandman episodes are there?
Season 1 of The Sandman was 10 episodes long. As of right now, there are only those 10 episodes of the series, but a second season is quite possible. The Sandman creator and author Neil Gaiman explained to Variety, “We told the first 400 pages of a 3,000-page arc in the first 10 episodes. So there’s a kind of a ‘you do the math’ on that. But then the other answer is, ‘How long is a piece of string?’ What we know that we would like to do, in a perfect world, as long as the audience is there and people come out for it and people want it, is we want to tell the whole story of Sandman that went through to ‘The Wake.’ And after that we want to tell ‘Sandman: Overture,’ and somewhere in there, possibly, even as a special or whatever, we’d love to do things like ‘The Dream Hunters.’ We quite probably weave the stories that are in ‘Sandman: Endless Nights’ into the body of the whole. What is nice is we have the entirety of ‘Sandman’ to draw on.”

What will happen in The Sandman Season 2?
If you’re familiar with The Sandman comics, Heinberg says Season 2 will follow them pretty closely. He explained to Rolling Stone that they’d go mostly in chronological order of the books, noting, “We are pulling a lot of the standalone stories out of there, not necessarily where they are in the comics, and folding them into the main saga. A good example is Tales In the Sand, which happens very early at the beginning of The Doll’s House saga in the comics. And that would be part of our Season of Mists storyline in Season 2.” Netflix He adds, “When Dream has to go back to hell in order to free Nada, that seemed like a more organic place to tell their backstory and find out how they fell in love, and how Nada ended up in hell. So that’s a good example of a story that’s now woven into the main fabric of Season 2.” Next, check out the 101 best Netflix shows to binge-watch right now.
