Season 3 of Evil begins moments after the end of season 2 when a newly ordained David, now known as Father Acosta, and Kristen kiss, which is the perfect launch for the theme for this season, which is temptation, as the two have to navigate this fraught new reality. Showrunner Robert King exclusively tells Parade.com, “In the spiritual sense, [they are dealing with] does God give you the tools to resist temptation no matter what? And if you’re talking in the secular sense, is temptation something that always has to be resisted?” But it is more than about personal temptation. These two work together and they have to get their relationship back on an even keel, a professional level in order to function as a team. “They really need to figure out how to find a new stasis now that they have crossed a line with one another,” showrunner Michelle King says. And Robert adds, “It’s like whenever two friends take it to a romantic place, how do you walk back across that line? Who will join the Evil cast in season 3?

Andrea Martin became a series regular for season 3 as Sister Andrea. “First of all, we love the actress Andrea Martin who can do it all, comedy, drama, singing if we had it,” says Michelle. “But in terms of what the character brings, she brings such a definite point of view. There’s no doubt. The other characters all have doubts in their life, Sister Andrea has no doubt.” And Robert adds, “I think we’re attracted to her certainty as Michelle said. Also, she seems to be one of the few people who scares Michael Emerson’s character, Leland. And it’s funny that a 70-year-old nun would be doing that, be scaring this guy who’s pure evil.”

What happened in the season 2 finale of Evil?

After two seasons of David and Kristen resisting the attraction between them, the season 2 finale changed all that. David was ordained, and now, as fully fledged Father Acosta, Kristen turns to him for help, asking him to hear her confession. And it is a big one. She admits to murdering serial killer Orson LeRoux. Despite his shock at the confession, David does absolve her of her sins, and she falls into his arms. Then, came the even bigger shock: they kissed! “Even though you’re not in a confessional booth, a priest who’s been ordained can absolve you,” Robert says. “Now as soon as he absolves her, it got probably a little dangerous because they started kissing. But I believe we’re admitting she has been redeemed according to the church.” “That was a true confession,” Michelle says. “Over the course of the season there are things where the police forgive her in this very corrupt way," Robert adds. “And she’s always going through these stages of, ‘Okay, I’ve been forgiven of this,’ and then oddly, she’s still obsessing on the fact that she doesn’t feel clean. So, that’s where the feeling of being redeemed by the church comes in.”

Kristen told Mira, who is a cop, that she killed the serial killer, and Mira said she understood. Was that your way of being able to deal with politics in a show that’s really not political? Because it really was about white privilege. If she had been a Black man say, who had confessed to Mira, she would be in jail.

Michelle: Yes, we very much like the idea of a character that ordinarily we would root for benefiting from something awful, getting away with murder because of racial privilege. Robert: What’s fun when you throw that at the audience, they’re stuck between two poles of liking that someone gets off. And so, in theory, it should be a cheering moment, but because of the means you’re feeling a little disturbed by it. That seems to be our sweet spot for the show anyway.

Who plays the grandmother on Evil?

That would be Christine Lahti, who previously worked with Robert and Michelle King on The Good Wife and The Good Fight. She says of her role as Sheryl Luria, Kristen’s mother, “I trusted the Kings. I knew that they would take her somewhere in a really original, funny, interesting way and I’ve embraced every twist and turn that they’ve taken Sheryl on.”
