His participation in this event–a lingerie and loungewear fashion show showcasing the newest designs for the pop star’s brand–would mark his first major public appearance since the defamation trial between him and his ex, actress Amber Heard. Depp and Heard battled it out in court for weeks, until a verdict was delivered in June of this year, with the Pirates of the Caribbean actor receiving over $10 million in damages after the jury found Heard’s 2018 op-ed about domestic violence defamatory. Heard was also awarded $2 million for her countersuit that was filed after Depp’s lawyer referred to her allegations against the actor as a hoax. The two are currently appealing the verdict. But even so, after CBS confirmed the news, fans expressed an even stronger sense of disapproval than they had just hours before. “Not surprised. Society is gonna protect abusers, nothing new unfortunately,” wrote one disappointed fan. “… this can’t be happening,” stated another. Another fan of the singer and designer questioned her antics online, writing, “rihanna going out of her way to, like, rehabilitate the image of a domestic abuser and rapist is f–ing crazy cause the hell is johnny depp, a rapidly decaying corpse, going to do at a LINGERIE SHOW? but even past all that does she even know her audience?” Someone else also dug into the Fenty Beauty founder, writing, “Rihanna is a billionaire, so that’s strike one. One minute she’s not performing at the Super Bowl in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick and the next minute she’s announcing she is and for some reason she invited Johnny Depp to be part of her show. Morals where?” “Rihanna is fr so weird for bringing Johnny Depp into her show. NO ONE was talking about this man until the trial. the ONLY reason he’s relevant is for beating women. like where is her head,” quipped another. “Rihanna giving Johnny Depp clout is actually a really good example of why it means nothing when someone says ‘as a victim of domestic violence, I support JD’. Like sorry that you went through that however it is still very not OK to support abusers!!!” exclaimed a let down supporter. “rihanna can’t be serious? with all these beautiful and unproblematic men in hollywood, and johnny depp is the one that appeals to you the most?,” another disapproving tweet read. Others, who were quite frankly at a loss for words, simply shared memes to cope with the news. “why would rihanna ask johnny depp to be featured in her LINGERIE campaign like what’s that got to do with that ugly ass man please be f–ing serious,” one Twitter user wrote next to a gif of Lea Michele crying. Someone else dug up a photo of Rihanna with disgraced performer R. Kelly–who was convicted of a slew of sex crimes–in response to the few supporters that decided to show up for Depp online today. Twitter’s wrath of memes kept going strong all day, continue reading for a few more top reactions. More News:
