It also follows two sets of siblings who emigrate from Mexico to achieve their own versions of the American dream. No one immigration story is the same, but many will see their own stories reflected within Promised Land. The show will also shine light on the challenges that come with assimilating to a new country, navigating parts of one’s cultural identity, and the nuances that exist between first and second generation Americans, but it will also have all the elements of a glamorous, primetime soap. “I would say more wine is savored than thrown in this show, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t throw down a little bit,” executive producer Maggie Malina said at the TCA junket for new TV show Promised Land. “So, there are so many juicy twists and turns to behold and to partake and deeply inhale.”

When does the Promised Land premiere?

The Promised Land premieres on ABC on Monday, Jan. 24.

Who is in the Promised Land cast?

John Ortiz (Joe Sandoval)

Joe is the commanding patriarch of his large family and the owner of Heritage House Vineyard in Sonoma County. Gaining his fortune has not been an easy path and he made enemies on his journey. While he understands the importance of family, he’s a business-first kind of man.

Cecilia Suárez (Lettie Sandoval)

Lettie is the yin to Joe’s yang. As the matriarch of the Sandoval family, she has to navigate her roles as wife, mother and stepmother. But scratch the surface, and it turns out that Lettie has a few secrets in her past.

Bellamy Young (Margaret Honeycroft)

Margaret plays a complicated role in the lives of the Sandoval family. She is Joe’s longtime nemesis, but, as his former first wife, also is the mother of three of his children. Margaret was off building her career as a hotel magnate, rather than raising her kids, and now she is trying to worm her way back into the lives of her adult children—even as she takes on her ex.

Christina Ochoa (Veronica Sandoval)

Veronica is the eldest Sandoval daughter and her father’s right hand at Heritage House Vineyards. She is the heir apparent and works hard to prove herself to her father, even as she strives to be a successful wife and mother.

Augusto Aguilera (Mateo)

Mateo is Lettie’s son from her first marriage and also is the hard-working general manager of Heritage House Vineyard. Even so, he isn’t part of the inner circle when it comes to both family and business.

Tonatiuh (Antonio Sandoval)

Antonio is the middle Sandoval sibling who recently returned to Sonoma after several years of living in New York working as a successful tequila entrepreneur. Sonoma is his rightful home, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t tensions between father and son ever since Antonio came out.

Mariel Molino (Carmen Sandoval)

Being the youngest Sandoval daughter has its advantages as Carmen was raised with more freedoms than her siblings. As a result, she has learned to “work smarter, not harder” and takes advantage of being underestimated in the shadow of her overachieving older sister.

Andres Velez (Carlos Rincón)

Carlos is a new to Sonoma valley, having recently immigrated from Mexico to build a new life.

Katya Martín (Juana Sánchez)

Like Carlos, Juana is an immigrant from Mexico, having moved to California with her sister in hopes of building a better life. Her dream is to become a teacher and she will make sacrifices to achieve her goal.

Rolando Chusan (Billy)

Billy is Carlos’ brother, who immigrated from Mexico prior to Carlos, and is able to help his brother get a job at the vineyard.

What was the inspiration for Promised Land?

“At the risk of revealing my age, as a kid, I was a huge Dallas fan I have to say," executive producer Matt Lopez said. “J.R. Ewing was sort of my spirit animal. I wanted to be him and so that was actually an inspiration. Another weird inspiration for this was, strangely enough, not a nighttime soap but a book. Somehow in my travels I missed East of Eden. I read it with my daughter, I guess, a year and a half ago now. If East of Eden was just a logline, you would think it’s like a primetime soap. And yet, in terms of what it’s going for in terms of the complexity of the characters, the richness of the themes and so on, it’s striving for so much more, and that’s, I think, what Promised Land really tries to do.

Where is Promised Land filmed?

“I would have loved to have shot this in Sonoma because it’s gorgeous up there, and we briefly explored shooting in Sonoma,” Lopez said. “The lack of sound stages is tough and so on. So, we have the good fortune to be shooting at a couple of different vineyards down here in Southern California.” Malina adds, “We are shooting at two different wineries as our main sets. Agua Dulce Winery is this incredible winery that not only grows grapes but also makes the wine in Agua Dulce, Calif. We’ve learned a lot working with them. It’s a beautiful place. The wine is delicious. You can go visit there. “Then there is another winery in Thousand Oaks that makes really big, bold reds and it’s called Mizel, and they’re relatively new. Agua Dulce has been in Southern California for a while. But Mizel has only really started making their wines available to the public. And it’s delicious and it’s a highly beautiful, manicured riding estate along with their vineyards where they grow the grapes.”
