Some fans might be surprised to learn that the person voicing Buzz in the movie is none other than Captain America himself, Chris Evans. After putting down his shield and bowing out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (at least for now), Evans has definitely spread his wings and ventured into major new projects, but he can’t seem to stop being a hero, as he brings new life to Buzz in Lightyear. In Disney’s official description of Lightyear, it’s “the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy.” While everyone knows Buzz from Toy Story, this will be a different take on the character. Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images At the original press presentation for the film (via The Illuminerdi), producer Galyn Susman said, “[Buzz] needed to have that nice rich sound, able to be both dramatic and comedic. And most importantly, he needed to be heroic without coming off as arrogant or dense. And that’s a tall order. And we immediately knew we had to ask Chris.” Susman and director Angus MacLane also addressed why the longtime voice of Buzz, Tim Allen, is not voicing the character in Lightyear when speaking with IGN about the film. Susman explained that they needed to make it obvious that this is a different version of Buzz, saying, “We needed a different voice. And our Buzz had to have hair. We needed some things that made it clear that this is not the Toy Story Buzz.” Pixar Along with Lightyear, Evans will soon appear in the highly anticipated Netflix action flick The Gray Man, which comes out on the streamer and with a limited release in theaters in mid-July. The film is directed by fellow Marvel veterans the Russo Brothers, with Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas costarring.
